Preparing to Welcome Baby Number Two: A Hospital Birth Story

There is something deeply different about welcoming your second baby into the world.

The unknowns are quieter this time. The fear is softened by experience. And yet, every birth still unfolds in its own completely unique way.

This beautiful family welcomed their second child during an emotional hospital birth in Santa Monica, surrounded by tenderness, anticipation, and the steady rhythm of a mother stepping once again into her power. This is a hospital birth story.

A Calm and Connected Labor Experience

From the moment labor began, there was a calmness in the room that only comes from a family who has already walked this road together before. Between contractions, laughter filled the space. Her partner held her close, grounding her with every touch and whispered reassurance. The excitement of meeting their newest little love sat quietly beneath every moment.

But this birth held something different.

This time, she chose to have her story documented.

Why Birth Photography Matters

As a birth photographer and birth videographer serving families throughout Los Angeles and Santa Monica, one of the greatest honors is preserving the moments mothers often never get to fully see themselves. The strength in their faces. The way their partners look at them during labor. The tiny details that disappear into the blur of birth and adrenaline.

During her first birth, so much happened in a haze. Like many mothers, she remembered pieces of it, but not the full story. This time, she wanted to hold onto everything.

The Moments Families Never Want to Forget

The quiet pacing of the hospital room.

The way her partner wrapped his arms around her during contractions.

The tears that came when they first heard their baby cry.

The overwhelming emotion of becoming a family of four.

Birth photography is about so much more than documenting labor. It is about preserving legacy. It is about giving families the ability to revisit one of the most transformative days of their lives with honesty, beauty, and emotion.

Strength Through Labor

As labor intensified, the room became quieter. Focus settled in. Nurses moved gently through the dim light while she breathed through each wave with incredible strength. Her partner never left her side.

And then, suddenly, their baby was here.

The room shifted instantly from anticipation to overwhelming joy.

The First Moments After Birth

There is a moment after birth that always feels sacred; the seconds where parents see their child for the very first time. Nothing else exists. Time slows. Every wall comes down.

Their newest baby was placed on her chest while tears streamed freely down both parents’ faces. The exhaustion, the relief, the love — it all lived together in that single moment.

Their first child would soon arrive to meet their new sibling, and just like that, an entirely new chapter began.

A Story Worth Remembering

Not just the birth itself, but the connection. The support. The transformation.

Being invited into these sacred spaces as a Los Angeles birth photographer and birth videographer is never something I take lightly. Every labor story is deeply personal, and every family deserves to have those memories preserved with care and honesty.

2022 started off with a bang. I attended a wonderful birth at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. A beautiful boy was brought to earth in the wee hours of January 4th. This was her second child and an induced labor. During my 24 hours there, I captured such wonderful and private moments. Not all parents want their images plastered all over the internet and I 100% respect that, but here are a few to share.

Where have I been?

As you can see this is my first post since September of 2021. Oh yes, it’s true–I have been a bit neglectful of the blog, but I have a great excuse! During the month of November and December, I am usually busy doing Santa photos. I started early November and it took me well into December to finish up the beautiful images of the many wonderful families that came to my studio.

What’s on tap for the rest of the year?

Births! Births! And more births! Oh yes, I have already booked 4 this year and am looking forward to seeing new bouncing babies!

I intend to write more about the childbirth process here in this blog. Spinning Babies workshops are coming up to enhance my doula offerings. Possibly furthering my education, I may get certified as a postpartum doula.

I can’t wait to see what the universe sends my way this year. I will gladly meet those things head on.

We set up a Facetime call with her and her husband. They were such wonderful people. We clicked right away. She asked about my doula services that I combine with birth photography. I explained how being a doulatog works. Turns out that was the service she and her husband wanted. Now, I am newly certified birth doula, but excited and passionate about this important service. If you are curious about what a birth doula does, I have a simple to read blog post explaining it here.

I met with them at their San Diego home as I would with all doula clients. We went over their birth desires and preferences. Some people call this a birth plan, but that tends to create unfulfilled wishes and disappointments. If you have a preference and desire, but keep an open mind if things go a different direction, then disappointment is lessened (generally speaking). We went over breathing techniques, talked about labor stages and what to expect. Practicing labor positions and how her partner was an integral part was also practiced. My job mostly was to teach him how to help her. We stayed together several hours talking about all types of things labor related and personal related.

Finally getting to the hospital

The day had arrived to induce labor. Since the hospital was so full, the date kept getting moved back. Finally at 11pm on August 18th, they were instructed to come in. I met them there at 1am or so and have to hand it to this woman. She did everything under the sun to bring this baby earthside. Her partner was the best as he never left her side.

The Pitocin Drip

They started pitocin soon after arriving at the hospital and slowly increased it over time. Many people think that induction means speeding up the process. While this can be true in some circumstances, more often it is a lengthy process. In this case it was very long.

Complete Exhaustion

Around the 30 hour mark, this warrior mother had had enough. The pain was too much, the labor had stalled and she was exhausted. The baby wasn’t tolerating the pitocin increases, yet without the increase her body wasn’t making the contractions it needed to.

A Cesarean Birth

At 8am she was taken back for a cesarean birth. She wanted it done. The exhaustion was overwhelming and she just wanted her baby girl.

Afterwards

They had a wonderfully happy baby girl and I am so proud of them. I have visited a couple times postpartum and she is amazing. Her parents are amazing and I am so blessed (a way overused word!) to have been part of this. If you would like to see there highlight real, you can find it here.
