<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Birth Photography vs. Birth Videography: Which One Is Right for You?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your baby is only going to be born once.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And as much as you think you’ll remember every little detail, birth has a funny way of turning into a blur afterward. You remember the big things, of course. The moment you met your baby. The way they felt in your arms. Maybe the first cry. Maybe the sound of your partner’s voice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But there will also be so much you never actually see.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You won’t see your partner’s face when they first look at your baby. Maybe you won&#8217;t hear what your mom whispered from across the room. You won’t see the nurse smiling in the background or the way someone reached for your hand when you needed it most.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re busy being in it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that’s exactly why documenting your birth can mean so much.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A photograph can bring you back to one tiny, beautiful moment. A film can bring the whole room back to life—the voices, the movement, the laughter, the tears, the sounds.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So when it comes to birth photography versus birth videography, it really isn’t about which one is better.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s about how you want to remember the day you met your baby.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignwide size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1280" height="853" src="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/free-birth-photo-of-a-primal-scream-by-birth-and-beauty.jpg" alt="birth photo of a Los Angeles free birth by Leona Darnell" class="wp-image-13749" srcset="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/free-birth-photo-of-a-primal-scream-by-birth-and-beauty.jpg 1280w, https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/free-birth-photo-of-a-primal-scream-by-birth-and-beauty-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/free-birth-photo-of-a-primal-scream-by-birth-and-beauty-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/free-birth-photo-of-a-primal-scream-by-birth-and-beauty-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Birth Photography Captures</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is something about a photograph that makes you stop.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A birth can move so quickly. One minute you&#8217;re breathing through a contraction, and the next you&#8217;re holding your baby. So much happens in between that you simply can&#8217;t take it all in while you&#8217;re there.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is one of the things I love about birth photography. A photograph gives you permission to stop time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can look at your partner&#8217;s face and remember exactly what was happening in that moment. You can see the hands you were holding onto, the tears that came, the laughter that broke through the tension. Notice your baby&#8217;s tiny fingers, the way they curled into your hand, or the expression on their face when you finally saw them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And sometimes it&#8217;s the photographs you didn&#8217;t expect that become your favorites.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The quiet moment before everything changed. Your partner sitting beside you while you rested. A nurse checking on you. Someone rubbing your back. Your hand resting on your belly. The look between two people who have just realized, <em>we&#8217;re really about to meet this baby.</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are the little pieces of your birth story that you may not remember seeing at all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because you were busy giving birth.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Years later, you can look at a photograph and notice something new every time. You can see the room. The people who were there. The emotions on everyone&#8217;s faces. The tiny details that were happening around you while your entire focus was on bringing your baby into the world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s what I love about a photograph.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It doesn&#8217;t just remind you that it happened.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For a moment, it lets you be there again.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignwide size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1280" height="854" src="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/A-Peaceful-Entrance-by-leona-darnell.jpg" alt="Color birth photo of a baby emerging from her mother by Leona Darnell" class="wp-image-13468" srcset="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/A-Peaceful-Entrance-by-leona-darnell.jpg 1280w, https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/A-Peaceful-Entrance-by-leona-darnell-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/A-Peaceful-Entrance-by-leona-darnell-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/A-Peaceful-Entrance-by-leona-darnell-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Birth Videography Captures That Photographs Can&#8217;t</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are some things a photograph simply can&#8217;t give you back.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It can&#8217;t let you hear your partner&#8217;s voice when they tell you, “You&#8217;re doing it.” A photo can&#8217;t capture the sound of your own breathing as you work through another contraction. It can&#8217;t bring back the laughter that happened in the room when everyone was exhausted and someone said something that made you smile.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Film can.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And honestly, it&#8217;s the sound that surprises people the most.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You may think you&#8217;re going to want to remember the big moment—the birth itself, your baby&#8217;s first cry, the moment you finally get to hold them. And of course, those moments matter. But years from now, it might be the little things that pull you right back into that room.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your partner&#8217;s voice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The encouragement from your doula, midwife, doctor, or nurse.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The sound of everyone getting a little quieter as your baby is about to arrive.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your own voice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first cry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The laughter afterward.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Someone saying your name.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The way your partner sounds when they realize, <em>that&#8217;s our baby.</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those things are impossible to recreate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A photograph lets you see a moment. Film lets you hear it, watch it unfold, and experience the moments surrounding it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can see the seconds before your baby arrives instead of only seeing the moment after. You can watch your partner&#8217;s expression change. Hear the room react. Watch your hands reach for your baby for the first time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And then there are the moments in between—the ones that don&#8217;t necessarily make a beautiful photograph but become part of the story when they&#8217;re woven together in film.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The deep breath.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The nervous laugh.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The little smile between contractions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The quiet.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The anticipation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The absolute chaos.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <em>“Oh my God, we&#8217;re having a baby.”</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s what makes birth film so different.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It doesn&#8217;t just show you what happened.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It gives you some of it back—the voices, the movement, the sounds, and the feeling of being there.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because there are things you don&#8217;t realize you&#8217;ll miss until they&#8217;re gone.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video height="720" style="aspect-ratio: 1280 / 720;" width="1280" controls poster="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/birth-center-birth-photo-by-leona-darnell.jpg" src="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/jess-and-meg-2-720p.mp4"></video></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What If You Want Both?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Honestly, you don&#8217;t have to choose.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Photography and videography tell the same story in different ways, and I think that&#8217;s what makes having both so special.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You might have a photograph of your partner holding your baby for the first time, their eyes full of tears. It&#8217;s the kind of image you frame, put in an album, or come across years later and stop to look at for a little longer than you intended.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then you watch your birth film and you hear your partner&#8217;s voice. Your baby&#8217;s first cry. You see what happened just before that photograph was taken and what happened afterward. Suddenly, that one image has a whole story around it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Neither replaces the other. They simply give you different ways to remember.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you&#8217;re worried about having too many people in the room, or wondering how photography and film can happen without making your birth feel like a production, that&#8217;s something worth discussing with your birth team. Your comfort comes first. The goal isn&#8217;t to turn your birth into a performance or to document every second. It&#8217;s to preserve the moments that matter while allowing you to stay present in your own experience.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1280" height="853" src="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/birth-center-birth-story-by-leona-darnell.jpg" alt="Birth story photo of a baby being delivered sunny side up at a birth center." class="wp-image-13366" srcset="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/birth-center-birth-story-by-leona-darnell.jpg 1280w, https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/birth-center-birth-story-by-leona-darnell-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/birth-center-birth-story-by-leona-darnell-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/birth-center-birth-story-by-leona-darnell-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For some families, photography is exactly what they want. Others know they want a film they can watch and listen to years from now. And if you want both, you can have a collection of photographs to revisit throughout your life and a film that brings you back to the day your baby arrived.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">What is Birth Videography?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Birth videography is a heartfelt journey that captures the profound moments of bringing new life into the world. Imagine the emotions that flood your heart as you hear the first cries of your baby, the whispers of encouragement from loved ones, and the overwhelming joy that envelops the room when your newborn is placed into your arms. These are the fleeting moments that can never be replicated but can be cherished forever through film. Birth videography transcends the physical acts of labor and delivery; it captures the essence of your unique birth story, filled with both monumental and subtle emotions that deserve to be remembered.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video height="720" style="aspect-ratio: 1280 / 720;" width="1280" controls src="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/birth-center-birth-of-two-moms.mp4"></video></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">How I Create the Birth Video</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mastering my camera is just the beginning — it’s about understanding the heartbeat of your birth experience. With careful attention to detail, I seamlessly transition between capturing video and still images, ensuring that every crucial moment is documented. I weave together moving clips, authentic sounds, and carefully chosen music, creating a film that resonates deep within your heart. The laughter, the tears, the quiet moments of anticipation — I strive to encapsulate it all, preserving the beauty of your birthing story in a way that feels both intimate and timeless. There’s nothing more fulfilling than capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments during labor, delivery, and the sweet embrace of bonding in that golden hour.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video height="720" style="aspect-ratio: 1280 / 720;" width="1280" controls poster="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/hospital-birth-photo-of-a-baby-being-born-by-leona-darnell.jpg" src="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/hospital-birth-story-film-by-birth-and-beauty.mp4"></video></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Why Not Just Have Birth Photos / Is Birth Videography Necessary?</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Photos freeze a moment in time, but video breathes life into those still frames. The gentle whispers of encouragement, the strength in your breath, your partner’s quiet tears of joy, and the magical first cry of your baby — all captured in motion, emotions woven together as a tapestry of love. Whether this is your first birth or your fifth, a birth film becomes a cherished treasure, a keepsake you will revisit time and again. If you take a moment to watch any of my <a href="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/portfolio/birth-story-video-and-films/">birth films</a>, I believe the answer to “Is Birth Videography necessary?” will resonate deeply within you.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video height="720" style="aspect-ratio: 1280 / 720;" width="1280" controls poster="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/laboring-at-home-with-her-dog-by-her-side.jpg" src="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/olivia-and-jacob-low-res-birth-film.mp4"></video></figure>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">How Long are These Birth Videos?</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do I capture every single moment over the span of 18 hours? No, but I do focus on snippets of this incredible day, weaving together the melodic sounds of your birth space, the heartfelt words of your partner, and the beautiful cries or coos of your new family member. These birth videos typically last between 5 and 10 minutes, yet they are brimming with love, raw beauty, and authentic emotion. They are not just videos; they are small pieces of art, crafted with care, that encapsulate the incredible journey of welcoming your baby into the world. Embrace the opportunity to hold onto your birth experience forever — <a href="https://www.birthandbeauty.com/contact/">let me help you tell this beautiful story</a>.</p>
